I imagine that when you read this new typographical piece, you envision Willie Nelson singing in your ear, “On the road again, just can’t wait to get on the road again”. And if you’re not a Willie Nelson fan . . . well, you can keep on being lame. The man is wicked-cool. So the rationale behind this piece goes a little something like this — on my daily walks to and from campus I noticed that I look at the ground a lot and frequently trip or bump into things because I also have my headphones on. I may be a little clumsy and yes at some points my daily journeys become dangerous, but I came to realize how much interesting content there is on the roads. People marvel at old architecture and masonry, but I find that streets are completely over looked. I can understand why. To most they are just there, slowly waring down over years of weathering and urban decay. I found the amalgamation of manufactured and organic elements magical. The reclamation of nature on a man-made structure is always interesting to me, but in regards to streets and roads it became something different. I tried to look at the cracks, oil spots and paint lines out of context. They slowly became recognizable figures of ascenders, decenders, strokes and counters. I saw typography within the randomness of nature and got all excited. This was a major break through for me because I usually see things in the most literal sense. Conceptualization has always been something I’ve continuously had to work on. I’m becoming more conscious to the potential in everyday things that most people take for granted.
P.S. I’ve also added a new post of my Ketchup & Mustard Mural within the DESIGN gallery.
